My thirteen year old daughter is a tell-it-like-it-is kind of girl. “Be the Needle! dad? Really???”
That pretty much leaves me speechless. I got nuthin after that.
But I’m compelled to state my case. I start by describing the popular idiom “it’s like looking for a needle in a haystack.” She responds “duh! I get that. But what does that have to do with your business?” “Well,” I mutter, trying to sound like this is all so obvious, “the whole idea behind that expression is that trying to find the needle is hard when it is buried in so much other junk. But the fact is, someone is actually looking for that needle and wants very much to find it.” I continue, thinking I’m making progress with her. “What would you rather be, the hay in the haystack or the needle?”
She quickly answers. “The needle!” “Right!!” I practically scream. Victory is mine!!
She says “that’s stupid” and walks out of my office.
She’ll come around.
